Government vehicles otherwise pay the same fare as everyone else. No concession or pensioner discount applies. SeaLink's fares page does not state whether payment on board is cash, card or both. All fares in Australian dollars (AUD).
The Moggill Ferry is a three-minute cable ferry across the Brisbane River linking Moggill, in Brisbane City Council's south-west, with Riverview, across the water in the City of Ipswich. It is the last vehicle ferry still working on the Brisbane River: past crossings at Bulimba, Dutton Park, Indooroopilly and the James Holt Ferry at Murarrie all closed decades ago as bridges replaced them, leaving Moggill the sole survivor.
Despite crossing between two different council areas, Moggill Ferry is not run by either council. SeaLink South East Queensland, part of the Kelsian Group, operates the ferry under contract to the Queensland Government. Queensland's own transport directory still points to an operator called Stradbroke Ferries; that brand has since folded into SeaLink, and the old link now simply forwards to SeaLink's site - a reminder to double-check who is actually running a crossing before trusting an old government listing.
A crossing has existed here since 1878, when Cobb & Co's Ipswich-Brisbane coaches used a punt at the site; Brisbane and Ipswich councils motorised it jointly in the 1940s. During the 2010-11 Queensland floods the vessel broke free of its guide cable and had to be lashed to the bank with ropes until the water dropped - a reminder that this stretch of river still closes the ferry without notice when it floods.
Because Moggill Reach is tidal - ranging roughly 0.2 metres at low tide to 2.5 metres at high - the concrete ramps on both banks steepen sharply at low water. SeaLink warns that trucks, coaches, long caravans and trailers with low rear clearance can struggle to load near low tide and should aim to cross closer to high tide instead.
The ferry runs daily except Good Friday and Christmas Day, from 6am to around 6.20pm on weekdays and 5.50pm on weekends and public holidays, carrying up to 20 vehicles per crossing for $2 a car. Passengers, pedestrians and bicycles ride free, as do emergency vehicles on active duty; government vehicles otherwise pay the standard fare.
- Arrive at the terminal a few minutes before departure; vehicle boarding usually closes earlier.
- Check the operator's service alerts before travelling — weather, tides and river levels affect services.
- Confirm accepted payment methods and whether a booking is required for vehicles.

SeaLink South East Queensland, part of the Kelsian Group, under a contract with the Queensland Government - not Brisbane City Council or Ipswich City Council directly, even though it links suburbs in both council areas.
It's the only one still operating. Earlier Brisbane River vehicle ferries at Bulimba, Dutton Park, Indooroopilly and Murarrie all closed once bridges took over their routes.
Yes. Brisbane City Council says the ferry stops running during flood events for safety - in the 2010-11 floods it broke free of its cable and had to be roped to the bank until the river dropped.
Yes. SeaLink has scheduled it out of service for planned maintenance from Saturday 7 November to Sunday 6 December 2026.
It can be difficult. Moggill Reach is tidal, and SeaLink warns the ramps get steep at low water, which can catch out semi-trailers, coaches, long caravans and trailers with low rear clearance.
Yes, walk-on passengers, pedestrians and bicycles all cross at no charge - only vehicles pay a fare.
