Rose Bay is a Sydney Ferries stop, so it takes the standard Opal fares: an Opal card, or a contactless bank card or linked device, tapped on and off. Transport for NSW's fare table puts ferry trips in two distance bands, 0-9 km at $7.35 for an adult and 9+ km at $9.20. The Trip Planner prices the Rose Bay to Circular Quay ferry at $7.35 (adult), and the child fare in the lower band is $3.67. The Rose Bay wharf page lists a machine that sells Opal single trip tickets and tops up cards, card payment only; the single-ticket price is not on the pages read here. Transport for NSW's adult fare page says the 30% off-peak discount applies to metro/train, bus and light rail, so no ferry off-peak price is listed for Rose Bay. Daily caps for an adult are $19.30 Monday to Thursday and $9.65 on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, with $50 a week; for a Child/Youth card the caps are $9.65, $4.80 and $25. All fares in Australian dollars (AUD).

Rose Bay is the first harbour stop east of Circular Quay on the F9 line, and for the moment it is a weekday-only ferry. Sydney Ferries, which Transport for NSW runs as part of the Opal network, lists 26 sailings a day from Circular Quay that call at the wharf and 26 departures back, each taking 13 minutes. They cluster in two blocks: 06:05 to 09:25 from the quay in the morning, then 16:15 to 23:45 from late afternoon into the night. The last boat leaves Rose Bay at 00:05. Between those blocks the F9 boats go to Watsons Bay and, according to the published grid, do not stop at Rose Bay at all, so a midday trip to the wharf means taking a New South Head Road bus instead. The reason is maintenance. Transport for NSW's alerts show the new Rose Bay Wharf closed from 31 August to 4 December, with passengers using the adjacent old wharf and tapping on and off at the readers on the closed one. A second alert limits Rose Bay ferries to weekday peak hours until 4 December, and a third, with no end date, says there are no off-peak weekday or weekend sailings until further notice. The wharf itself has a car park, bike racks, a kiss-and-ride bay, a next-service display and a machine for Opal top-ups and single trip tickets, which takes cards only. Boarding is by ramp with staff assistance, and the page lists a hearing loop. The fare is the standard Sydney Ferries Opal fare for a trip of up to 9 km: $7.35 for an adult, $3.67 for a child. Tap on at the wharf reader and tap off at the other end, and the ferry counts toward the same daily and weekly caps as trains and buses. Because the F9 arrives at Circular Quay, many riders continue onto the train or the light rail from there; a contactless payer who changes mode within 60 minutes gets a $2 transfer discount, according to the timetable PDF. This page covers Rose Bay only. The same line's Watsons Bay service, which carries the weekend and midday boats, is a separate page.
  • Arrive at the terminal a few minutes before departure; vehicle boarding usually closes earlier.
  • Check the operator's service alerts before travelling — weather, tides and river levels affect services.
  • Confirm accepted payment methods and whether a booking is required for vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

Not at the moment. The F9 timetable valid from 19 September 2026 has no Rose Bay stop on weekends or public holidays, and Transport for NSW's alert says there are no weekend Rose Bay ferries until further notice. Buses run along New South Head Road instead.
06:05 on weekdays, reaching Rose Bay at 06:18. Further sailings leave every 20 minutes to 09:25, then from 16:15 with the last Circular Quay departure at 23:45.
00:05 on weekday nights, which arrives at Circular Quay at 00:18 according to the F9 grid. The Transport for NSW departures board for the wharf listed it on 16 October 2026.
13 minutes in each direction. The Trip Planner shows 09:25 from Rose Bay arriving at 09:38 at Circular Quay.
$7.35 for an adult tapping an Opal card, contactless card or phone; $3.67 for a Child/Youth Opal card. Both are the 0-9 km ferry band. A paper Opal single trip ticket costs more, but the price is not shown on the pages used for this page.
The adjacent old Rose Bay Wharf. Transport for NSW says the new wharf is closed for maintenance from 31 August to 4 December and that the Opal readers on the closed wharf still work for tapping on and off.
The timetable shows weekday boats between 09:45 and 15:45 going from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay in 23 minutes with no Rose Bay stop. Transport for NSW's alert limits Rose Bay ferries to weekday peak hours until 4 December.
The F9 timetable says all ferries and new wharves are wheelchair accessible, but some older wharves lack facilities, and ramp gradients are steeper at low tide. While the new wharf is closed and boats use the old one, Transport for NSW's alerts say to use bus services on New South Head Road for accessible and off-peak travel. The Rose Bay wharf page lists boarding assistance by ramp, so staff help is part of the arrangement.
