Webbs Creek Ferry

Webbs Creek Ferry is a free, cable-guided vehicular ferry that Transport for NSW operates across the Hawkesbury River, a short distance upstream of where the river meets the Macdonald River. One landing sits on River Road, on the Wisemans Ferry side of the water; the other lands on the road that continues north as St Albans Road, on the opposite bank. The crossing itself is only about 400 metres and takes roughly five minutes end to end, with the vessel able to carry up to 24 cars per trip. Don't confuse this crossing with the separate Wisemans Ferry service nearby. Wisemans Ferry crosses the same river at the village of Wisemans Ferry itself, downstream of the Macdonald River junction, linking Old Northern Road on one side with the road toward the Central Coast on the other – a different route with its own landing points a short drive away. Wisemans Ferry also runs a second, smaller vessel on weekends and public holidays that Webbs Creek does not have. Because it is part of the state road network rather than a commercial ferry route, there is no fare: cars, motorcycles and other vehicles cross at no charge, funded by Transport for NSW. There is no ticket office, booking system or online payment – drivers simply queue at the ramp and cross when the ferry is ready, generally on a first-come, first-served basis. The ferry runs continuously, but is not available every minute of the day. It closes for one hour overnight, from 2am to 3am, and for scheduled maintenance between 9.30am and 12 noon on the first Tuesday of every month (this window is due to extend to 1pm from 1 November 2026). Being a river crossing, the service can also be suspended without notice during heavy rain or flooding on the Hawkesbury River; Transport for NSW has previously detoured traffic via St Albans Bridge when the ferry has been out of action. Anyone planning a trip through this stretch of the Hawkesbury Valley should check Live Traffic NSW immediately before travelling, rather than relying on a fixed timetable.
